If you get caught breaking a GDL law, Colorado will add points to your license. Points could result in community service and higher insurance costs. If you're 16 or 17 years old and accumulate 6 points, you could lose your license.

But that's not the point.

The laws are designed to keep you - and everyone else in your vehicle and on the road - safe. Sixteen-year old drivers are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than the average of all other drivers.

Primary and Secondary Offenses

A primary offense is one for which drivers may be pulled over and cited without any other reason. A secondary offense is one that drivers can only be ticketed for if they're already pulled over for another reason.

GDL violations are secondary offenses except for seatbelt violations, which are primary offenses. Violations can result in fines, accumulation of points on your driver's license, community service, and/or loss of your license.

Restricted License Penalties for seat belt and passenger restriction violations:

Violation Fine Hours of Community Service License Suspension Points
1st Offense Up to $65 8 to 24 2
2nd Offense Up to $130 16 to 40 2
Subsequent Offense $195 16 to 40 2

If a driver under age 18 accumulates 6 or more points, their license may be revoked.

Your parents can pull your license if you're under 18. (They don't need a specific reason, and no, we're not kidding!)
